A desperate Michigan dad is accused of robbing a bank–as a last-ditch attempt to pay for his one-year-old daughter’s costly chemo treatments, after her insurance was abruptly canceled.

Brian Randolph, 23, was arrested on August 14.

Police say that Randolph robbed the Vice Credit Union in South Lyon, Michigan, on August 12. Surveillance photos show Randolph giving the teller a note, which indicated he had a gun, though it’s unclear if he actually had one.

Randolph’s daughter, Brailynn, suffers from retinoblastoma, a form of eye cancer. She requires chemotherapy every four weeks.

But, recently, the insurance company that was financing Brailynn’s treatment canceled her insurance.

According to Randolph, he was unable to afford the costly, life-saving treatments out of pocket–and he robbed the bank in an effort to have enough money to pay for her upcoming appointment.

Randolph’s girlfriend and Brailynn’s mother, Asia Dupree, told the media: “Time was ticking right before her appointment came up… At the end of the day, the only thing I can think about is him trying to take care of his child.”

Dupree is currently working to get back Brailynn’s coverage as soon as possible, so their daughter can continue treatment.

Randolph, however, has been charged with armed robbery and bank robbery, and is being held on a $500,000 bail.
